Fanreports

Both band and crew seemed a bit rusty at Reno after the long break since the 2006 shows, so this performance had the air of a warmup for the tour leg to come. Pete made reference to the band rehearsing in a tour bus outside the venue right before the show. Roger was reserved for much of the show, in the first half he wasn't smiling and laughing with folks in the front rows as usual. He said he was late getting back from a trip to Las Vegas, maybe that and the biting cold outside threw him off his pace. Lovely to see Rabbit back, he seemed in good spirits, smiling and bobbing his head to the music. He appeared a bit haggard which is understandable with the strain he has been under, hopefully his wife Sue is doing better. Pino's bass solo in "My Generation" was tooth-rattling loud, it really startled me! The customary problems with monitors were present, Roger as usual took out one or both earpieces frequently but so did Zak who appeared upset about not being able to hear early in the show. Business as usual for the Who's technical gremlins. Pete made a speech about how cool it was to finally have a new CD after so many years (cheers from the crowd) and said something like thanks all you who have bought it and those of you who haven't can just [bleep] off, classic Pete. He then noted that two original Who members were dead and the day would come when he and Roger would join them so fans would then save money not having to buy any more Who tickets (loud mock booing). Pete naturally had a sly smile on his face the whole time. Roger's moment came when he started singing "Mike Post Theme," but the rest of the band started to play "Black Widow's Eyes" which led the song to collapse within moments. Roger began apologizing for being in the wrong key then changed that to being in the wrong song. Naturally Pete did his bit to help Roger feel like a goofball. However this seemed to loosen up Roger and Pete both and the show picked up energy at that moment. However Roger wasn't the only one confused, as once they did get to "MPT" the video for "BWE" was on the screens behind them, perhaps a last minute change in the running order didn't reach the video dept. It was after the "BWE/MPT" breakdown that the band opened the throttle during "Relay," Pete really laying into his guitar. Of course as Pete goes, so goes the show, and this was were he went into high gear, from this point on they thundered home in fine style. Those hoping for a revamped setlist were disappointed. "Relay," "Eminence Front" and "Real Good Looking Boy" were back but they were all played earlier in the tour. Some new video was debuted, "MIAPD" being a notable example. The local paper in an otherwise good review complained about too many new songs, but I have to give The Who credit for playing so much new material, few "classic rock" acts will take such a big chance. All things considered this was a good performance if not a great one, it took them awhile to get warmed up but once they hit their stride nobody in the audience was sitting down. Pete had the last word on the rough bits when after the showclosing "Tea and Theatre" he lifted his acoustic guitar as if he was going to smash it and then bopped himself on the head with it! He then gave Roger a big kiss on the forehead as the crowd roared its approval.
