I saw The Who in 1971 at Hara Arena in Dayton, Ohio and to this day, that's the concert I measure all others by. "Who's Next" had been released just two weeks prior to the performance and I immediately fell in love with the album. I spent a lot of time in the days leading up to the concert familiarizing myself with the music so I could better appreciate the show. When they opened with "Love Ain't for Keeping," there was a mad rush among fans toward the front of the stage. I ended up literally pressed against the stage in front of Pete Townshend! There are a lot of things I remember about the show, but the main element that stands out was how powerful they were as a live band. In that setting, the music was mesmerizingly strong yet nearly orchestral in sound - particularly during portions of "Tommy." Seeing Townshend that close up was like watching a caged animal pacing the stage - an animal that seemed capable of losing control. And that's what made The Who so compelling. The band was not playing it safe - they were going beyond the bounds of convention in search of a magic that is only be revealed when souls are laid bare. It was truely amazing how those four English lads could produce such a ferocious, yet musical sound! My brother Sol and some friends, including Eric Loy, were there that night as well and we still talk about that concert to this day.
