set time: 8:50pm to 11:05pm
opening act: Ryan Downe
PT on electric most of the night (The Real Me, Is It In My Head, IÕve Had Enough, 5:15, Sea and Sand, The Rock, Love Reign O'er Me, Substitute, I Can't Explain, Who Are You). Simon Townshend is really quite good. Zak Starkey on drums.
John "Rabbit" Bundrick on keys. Billy Nichols on percussion, backup vocals. P.J. Proby as The Godfather, and another young guy (is it Ben Waters, like in the UK tour?) as Ace Face. A second keyboard player, and full horn section.
"Sea and Sand" was fucking oustanding. "Is It In My Head?", "5:15" also very good. Townshend was just jacked-up and rocking all night long; windmills all over the place, and holding his Strat by the body and shaking it around like old times. I had high expectations based on reports of the European shows, but it still was way more amazing than I would guessed. And while it was powerful to hear Pete on electric, his acoustic work all night was equally impressive. "Drowned" and »I'm One« were particularly good. Pete was really charismatic and inspiring.
After Quad, PT, RD and JAE stood alone at center stage, and someone threw a couple of roses to PT, and he held them like a beauty queen, standing between RD and JAE, making funny little expressions of mock embarassment, like "oh, I can't believe I really won!".
Both the major newspapers in Minneapolis and St. Paul had interviews with Simon Townshend, and he talked about how Pete is really "into it" again. I wrote this off as hype, but it was true. PT tossed his strat in the air at the end of the show, but did catch it. Way more a theater piece than I would have thought. The filmed bits with spoken pieces by »Jimmy the Mod« worked well, contrary to what I'd heard. It was very by the book, and the setlist was the same as they've been playing for awhile on this tour. But the playing of both PT and Simon were the put the show over the top, and added the excitement.
