Fanreports

I received a signed ticket stub dated Friday 16th February 1970 (the date that was postponed because of Roger's bronchitis). This was obviously retianed for use at the rescheduled date of 26/10/1970. The letter accompanying reads: "Trentham Gardens has a balcony on both sides and this was the only place where there was any seating so we, I was with my wife, went up there. There was a huge, by the standard we were used to in 1970, mixing desk with a shaven headed guy (John "Wiggy" Wolfe) working on it. Pete Townshend suddenly arrived from nowhere discussing things with him. Being cheeky, I got into conversation with him and, especially as this was about an hour before the concert was due to start, he was quite happy to chat, very relaxed. He told me that the PA was 2000 watts, amazing, we tought our Selmar 100 was outstanding at the time. I asked him for his autograph and he suggested signing the remaining half of my ticket. He used my pen to do this and then put it in his pocket, I hadn't the nerve to ask for it back. The stage contained 14 Wem and Hiwatt 4 x 12s with Hiwatt amps for Townshend and 10 similar for Entwistle. Keith Moon's Premier kit was the biggest we'd ever seen, with a huge gong behind him and, what really impressed me, a floor tom just to keep his drink on!! Support act was The James Gang, including Joe Walsh. This was the last time they were together for 35 years. As this was the last night of the tour, The Who had planned their own tribute to them. Whilst they were playing, roadies kept coming on with flowers and plants until at the end, the stage looked like The Chelsea Flower Show. My wife by this time had fallen asleep, she found the long solos boring. She still maintains she's the only person to fall asleep at a Who concert. The Who came on and played 'Substitute' & 'I Can't Explain', then formed a huddle around Keith. Townshend suddenly walked to the microphone and said "As this is the last night of the tour, we've decided to do 'Tommy'." Even now, 37 years later I can still picture the scene. Brilliant."
