9. November 1968 - The Who played two shows at the Adelphi Cinema, Slough, England as part of a package tour with Free (a new band who opened the show), Joe Cocker and the Greaseband, The Crazy World of Arthur Brown and The Mindbenders (without Wayne Fontana). There may have been another act.
The Who played for a whole 30-minutes, with Townshend telling the audience that they now preferred to play for 'two hours or more'. Set included A Quick One, MG and Pictures of Lily. I recall Daltrey berating the sound engineer to 'turn the fuckin' bass down, are you thick or something' - which turned out to be a perennial issue for the band until Entwhistle's demise.
This was my first Who show - saw them regularly over the next couple of years including at the Fairfield Halls, Royal Albert Hall, London Coliseum, the Oval Cricket Ground and Reading University. Gave up on the live shows after the venues got too large and Townshend started really hitting the brandy - after the incredible performances at the Fairfields and Coliseum it was pitiful to see a drunk Townshend make an absolute mess of Quadrophrenia at the London Edmonton Christmas shows.
