Note
Cancelled. The Who were due to appear at the Winter Gardens in Malvern, Worcestershire on this night in 1966. The group's equipment was sent on ahead but at 7pm the theatre took a call saying the group's van was having brake trouble and they would be late in arriving. They phoned again at 9:30pm saying they were at Oxford having repairs done but would turn up late. Roger eventually turned up but not the rest of The Who and promoter Freddie Bannister had to announce The Who would not be appearing but tickets would be honoured for a later appearance in Malvern in June. Support band The Deep Feeling (featuring Dave Mason and Jim Capaldi) played for the whole of the evening. The truth of the matter was that The Who's van hadn't broken down. The Who were on the point of splitting up with Roger threatening to walk out. It was probably the lowest point in The Who's career with Pete saying later that he was considering joining forces with Paddy Chambers, Klaus Voorman and Gibson Kemp of Paddy Klaus and Gibson. Roger left The Who and for the next few gigs Pete and John shared the vocals. Needless to say, the no-show of The Who in Malvern led to a destructive rampage through the town by local fans (www.thewho.com; Anyway Anyhow Anywhere p. 122)
