It was no surprise that the Who kicked off Wednesday night's concert with "I Can't Explain," a song that has opened countless shows. What's harder to explain is how the vener...

Who's Left: Townshend and Daltrey mix old and new rock well

It seemed a grim proposition on paper.
Take one Jurassic rock band that's quite literally half dead. Add a set list that's chock full of new tunes (read: numbers that, in t...

Technical note: Pete's guitar worked for only the first or second chords of "Can't Explain" before shorting out completely. He stood helplessly throughout the song waiting for a roadie to help. I thought it was odd that he missed the entire first song. . . major malfunction there. A letdown that maybe set the tone for the night for him. Would have been a great excuse to fire up the crowd and just smash the thing! Bottom line: I was impressed (perhaps fascinated) by the new material. I felt like this was a legit creative or artistic entity - not a nostalgia/"cash cow" act (Rolling Stones). I was surprised how much new material they played. That to me showed real balls. And the execution was very tight. The old warhorses (songs) in my opinion ranged from good to outstanding. The Who's Next stuff was pretty stale. The Tommy material was brilliant. Great drumming. Surprise tunes of the night that really got the Key going: "Eminence Front" and "You Better You Bet." Pete showed real passion on EF - both with regard to guitar and vocals. The sound was pretty good. Loud. I wish Pete's guitar was louder. Daltrey's vocals were loud and if he's struggling now at the end of the tour I didn't really notice. he impressed me. Pete did look wiped out. He made a couple half-hearted attempts at jumping and his playing seemed just a little flat. But the evening was special from an emotional standpoint. Both Pete and Roger appeared genuinely grateful and moved by the Seattle crowd's reaction. A longtime Who city. . . . funny to think that 30 years ago this week practically they played the same bulding (more or less) . . . and were considered "old" then! Physically they were more feeble than I thought they might be. Musically they were quite good. I am not an expert but I got the feeling that perhaps this was a tired, "last night of the tour" show. What's up with Daltrey playing acoustic guitar on Who Are You? Hilarious. Simon ... is he auditoning for the role of Edge in a forthcoming U2 movie? That also made me laugh.
