A visitor gets in the groove at the Hedgestock 2006 festival at Knebworth House, an unusual marriage of money and mirth-making and perhaps the most surreal and entertaining conference ever sponsored by the hedge fund industry. Dubbed by its promoters as "two days of peace and love", the inaugural event has gathered more than 4,000 hedge fund industry managers, service providers, bankers and others from the industry at Knebworth, the country estate 45 minutes north of London better known for hosting rock concerts by the likes of Led Zeppelin and Oasis.
The aim: unbridled networking sprinkled with drinking, gambling, polo and rock music - to be capped by a two-hour performance by veteran rock band The Who last night. All proceeds from the event, put together by industry consultancy Albourne Partners, will go to the Teenage Cancer Trust. With an entrance fee of £500 a person and a stack of other fundraising initiatives, it appeared as though Hedgestock was set to be a highly successful effort.
