The Who must certainly be the best band. Their Friday night show in Chicago proved that those excellent October gigs in England were no fluke. They are learning to play like their records.
Again. »Boris The Spider« in true creepy, crawly fashion is authentic. »Magic Bus« is now injected midway through the act, electric with bass-guitar-drums elastic interplay. Pete Townshend jumps in the air and 20,000 kids applaud. Roger Daltrey kicks over a mike stand and the place erupts. Keith Moon mimes to the quiet intro to »Behind Blue Eyes« and threatens not to return to the stage. lt always takes an adequate show the night before to bring out the best in The Who and Thursday night had not been spectacular.
That's why Friday evening was a treat. Tension pulled the best out of The Who. DaItrey pouts, going in circles during the »Won't Get Fooled Again« intro. Tonight Tommy is alive. No matter how good »Pinball Wizard« is. »I'm Free« is better. The laser beam finale elevates The Who higher than high.
