I attended the 8/22 show at the Sacramento Valley Amphitheatre in Marysville, Calif. In short, this was the best Who concert I have seen since 1976. Not since the days of Moon do I remember seeing the band have as much fun. Much more relaxed than some of the later shows I've seen.
A lot of good-natured bantering about between Townshend and Daltry about anything and everything that came to mind (ex-wives, not having had sex in over six weeks, the bugs that seemed to attack them all on stage as the concert opened, teenaged angst, Roger's very mean mother and Pete seemed had a flashback and told everyone about an Earth Wind and Fire concert he saw a number of years ago where during the bass solo the bass player magically floated up into the air - live a Vegas magic act).
The set list seemed short, but the concert lasted almost 3 full hours (that's just The Who, add another 50 mins or so for Unamerican). A lot of the songs were stretched out with tremendous, vintage-era Who jams. Townshend gave a clinic on guitar-doing things and playing like I've haven't seen in 25 years. Entwhistle was his usual, quiet, stable presence and absoluted floored the crowd with a(nother) bass solo that shook the rafters and caused quite a few jaws to drop. Roger's voice was also in great shape - much better than I expected.
Rabbit and Zak, well what can you say. These guys really fill the voids (musically and personally) that round out the band. Zak was doing Moon riff-for-riff in some cases - he is one fantastic drummer.
Awesome show.
