Fanreports
Butch Betts
The Who started the last U.S. leg of that year's concert tour in Charlotte, their first appearance there, and were in great form. Townshend was so concerned about the crowds' frenzied reaction, particularly the stage rushing, that he extended his hands in a "stop, calm down" reaction when the band first walked onstage. Keith Moon stated "We're surprised to see so many people in Charlotte tonight. We didn't KNOW there was this many people in Charlotte." That present note states that there was only one other concert venue at that time in Charlotte, which is inaccurate. Another smaller venue in Charlotte, called The Park Center, was a great place to see rock bands. I saw Alice Cooper, Iron Butterfly, Janis Joplin, The Allman Brothers, Black Sabbath, Boston, Grand Funk Railroad, Cheap Trick, Mountain, the early Doobie Brothers, and many others there in the 60's and 70's.
